Fakespeare: The Tragickal Saveings Of King Nigel (2009)
Following a complete sell out run at that year's Edinburgh Fringe, Russell Kane presented his celebrated blank verse bonanza.
Shakespeare has been reinvented in modern form many times. Russell turned this notion on its head: Why not take our silly modern woes and re-work them into Fakespearian verse?
King Nigel is an Essex banker who has lost everything. No options are left (yes, a banking pun), and thus he must himself do in. But can his secret lover and PA, Donna of Billericay, save him from himself? Or will she also be pulled into his bubbling pit of excremental mental evil and that?
Written, directed and starring Russell himself, this two-hander also featured Sadie Hasler (of Al Murray’s Multiple Personality Disorder, ITV1). A ridiculously bawdy romp in blank verse, there were more similes than…err...I can’t think of one, and played till thy mind throbbed with trope.
